What we do

Grinding, not digging.

Pulling a stump out with an excavator leaves a crater, wrecks the lawn around it, and costs a fortune to bring in. A stump grinder does the opposite: it chews the stump into wood chips right where it stands, working from the top down until it's well below the surface.

We grind 6–12 inches below grade as standard — enough to lay sod, seed grass, or set a garden bed on top — and deeper on request if you're replanting a tree in the same spot. The lawn around the stump stays intact, and most single stumps are done in under an hour.

  • Mow straight over it. No more wrecked blades or weed-whacking around a dead spot.
  • Lose the trip hazard. Especially where kids play or where you can't see it under snow.
  • Evict the carpenter ants. Rotting stumps are standing invitations for ants and beetles.
  • Stop the sucker regrowth. Poplar and lilac stumps will keep sending up shoots until they're ground out.
  • Get the corner back. Plant, extend the garden, or just enjoy flat lawn again.

We grind

We show up when we said we would — fully insured, with guarding set around the work area — and grind the stump 6–12 inches below grade. Most single stumps take under an hour, gate to gate.

You pick the finish

Chips left mounded to settle, raked level, or hauled away with topsoil brought in — your call, priced up front. Either way we sweep the hard surfaces before we leave.

Diameter

The biggest factor. Measure across the widest part of the stump at ground level — root flare included, because we grind that too.

How many

The machine's already on your property, so every stump after the first costs less. Clearing a whole line of them? That's the cheapest per-stump price you'll get.

Access

Our grinder fits through a 36-inch gate. Tight access, steep slopes, or a long haul from the truck adds time, and we'll tell you before — not after.

The finish

Chips left in place are included. Raking level, hauling chips away, or bringing in topsoil and seed are add-ons, quoted up front.

One firm number before we start. If a stump turns out to be tougher than we quoted, that's our problem — the price doesn't move.

Common questions

Before you ask.

How deep do you grind?

6–12 inches below grade as standard, which is plenty for sod, seed, or a garden bed. Replanting a tree in the same hole? Say so in the quote — we'll grind deeper and chase the bigger surface roots.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding makes more chips than people expect — a big stump can produce several wheelbarrows' worth. By default we leave them mounded over the hole; they settle over a season and make decent mulch. We can also rake them level, or haul them away and bring in topsoil, priced up front.

Will the tree grow back?

For most species, grinding out the stump kills the tree for good. A few stubborn ones — poplar, lilac, sumac — can send up suckers from roots left in the soil. We'll tell you if your tree is one of them and grind deeper to cut the odds.

What about gas and utility lines?

Grinding only goes 6–12 inches down, which stays above most buried services — but near a gas meter, septic bed, or irrigation line we don't guess. If the stump sits near anything suspicious, we arrange utility locates before grind day. Locates are free; hitting a line is not.

Are you insured?

Yes — Stumpbreakers carries commercial general liability insurance, and we'll gladly send you a copy of our certificate before the job. Grinding throws wood and stone and works close to fences, foundations, and buried services, so proper coverage protects your property as much as ours. If a contractor can't show you proof of insurance, that's your answer to hire someone else.

Can you get into my backyard?

If your gate opening is 36 inches or wider, yes. Measure the actual opening (not the fence panel) and mention slopes, steps, or soft ground in your quote request.

Do you grind in winter?

We grind from spring thaw until the ground freezes hard — in North Bay that usually means April through late November. Frozen stumps grind slowly and snow hides what we need to see, so deep-winter jobs wait for spring. Get on the list early.
